Kids Always Remember

I’ve had a few reminders lately from some unexpected places of how kids remember and hold onto their relationship (or lack thereof) with their dad for their entire lives. I was recently listening to the radio and heard a song from a mainstream rock group about remembering his relationship with his dad. Here are a few of the lyrics:

Dear Father, forgive me
Cause in your eyes, I just never added up
In my heart I know I failed you, but you left me here alone
 
[Chorus]
If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain?
Cause I remember everything.
If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets?
Cause I remember everything.

If you know the reputation of this group, it is a somewhat shocking and reflective song for their normally tough exterior. It is a reminder that we all carry this powerful relationship with us no matter who we are. You can listen to the song below.

Are You Ready to Be a Dad?

I came across a “test” recently and found it hilarious. I don’t think I would have passed this though.

Here is a sample:

GROCERY STORE TEST

Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop at the grocery store. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.

Looking Back

I came across a post that I had written on my personal blog two weeks after my first child was born. Gavin is now three years old and I had a fun sense of nostalgia as I reread these words. What I also realized is that my two conclusions are still spot on (three years later and now about to have three kids).

The last 9 months of my life have been unlike any other. I have received countless advice and preparation as to what to expect once Gavin was born. Much of it was unsolicited and honestly rather frustrating. Some of it was priceless. As we sit at the 2 week mark of Gavin’s life, I’ve had a few weeks to reflect on what was told to me as an expecting father and what I actually experienced. I have come to two conclusions:
