I was asked a question recently that surprised me, and then surprised me that it surprised me. It was an incredibly simple question.

Who is the model dad in the Bible?

The Sunday school answer is the easy one—God! Beyond that lies a sea of murkiness.

I racked my brain through the New Testament. Nothing with the disciples, nothing spelled out in the early Church, and this is one of the few areas where “Jesus” isn’t the correct answer.

Kids Always Remember

I’ve had a few reminders lately from some unexpected places of how kids remember and hold onto their relationship (or lack thereof) with their dad for their entire lives. I was recently listening to the radio and heard a song from a mainstream rock group about remembering his relationship with his dad. Here are a few of the lyrics:

Dear Father, forgive me
Cause in your eyes, I just never added up
In my heart I know I failed you, but you left me here alone

If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain?
